It seems like every other week some pop cultural item gets re-imagined as hipster. Star Wars characters as hipsters, 20th century icons as hipsters, Disney princesses as hipsters. Now we have the Wizard of Oz characters as hipsters.

Joke about how fitting this is because “hipsters don’t have brains either!” goes here
What next? Star Trek? Transformers? Law & Order? Oh, wait, scratch that last one. Jeff Goldblum is already on L&O: Criminal Intent and they actually had an episode about squatting hipsters in Williamsburg covering up a bandmate’s death.
Still, no matter how good the individual work that goes into these re-imaginings might be, it seems like every time I see a new one it becomes more and more passe. Which is a shame, because a) that’s a pretty stereotypical hipster reaction, and b) these drawings (credit to Jordan Roland) are actually very well done. I’m just not up in arms because I’ve sen this concept over and over (and over and over and…).
Sometime next month someone will pick an arbitrary movie or TV show, spend a few hours working on what they would look like if they lived in Portland, and upload the results to the internet. And one of our other authors will see that it’s their favorite show/movie, and write a very similar article to this one. A sense of “we’ve been here before” will permeate the whole thing.
Besides, they can try all they want. It doesn’t get any hipper than The Wiz.
