I totally remember my first time. I was with about fifty other lil’ freshmen in the environmental awareness house dorms who just popped their virgin voter cherries that day. Everyone got ready to take it all off and go streaking while they played The National’s “Fake Empire” right after the election results were announced. It was a pretty weird night, but I was happy that my first time voting was important and awesome.
Only a few days after the lip-sync PSA video to Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” (featuring my fave ladies Carrie Brownstein and Miranda July) came out, Lena Dunham created a video vividly describing why your first time “shouldn’t just be with anybody” (weps!). Specifically meant to encourage those in the post-college “what am I doing, my parent’s aren’t paying my rent anymore?” phase to get their tuchases into the voting booth and support Obama. Just take Lena’s advice, nothing is better than doing it for the first time with “the guy who brought the troops out of Iraq”.
