Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, AKA “America’s ‘Rabbi,’” is running for Congress in New Jersey’s 9th district. He is running against incumbent Bill Pascrell and is losing terribly. Even though Sheldon Adelson is backing Rabbi Shmuley with $1 million, he is having a tough time breaking through a Democrat-heavy district.
Rabbi Shmuley is probably not the first rabbi to run for Congress, but if elected he would be the first rabbi to serve in Congress. Most Jews would think this is a wonderful thing. Although most Jews don’t really know Rabbi Shmuley.
Without going too deep into his radio shows, relationships with celebrities including Michael Jackson, and constant TV time, I’m going to let former PR rep for The Michael Jackson Tapes describe his feelings on the election as he sees it:
“There is no big draw or push to go to the polls for Shmuley or against Shmuley,” said Engelmayer, who managed a publicity campaign for one of the rabbi’s books, “The Michael Jackson Tapes.”
“His candidacy appears to be more like publicity for him than something that really has a chance. There is no real drive within the community, no lawn signs, no fliers, no posters.” //The Jewish Week
OOF. PR guy knows PR. This entire election for Rabbi Shmuley is just a way to get more twitter followers, more people to buy his books, more people ‘look at me! look at me!’ by not actually do any work to campaign. By not actually being interested in helping those in need or even the public good. Which is odd because campaigning would get his name out there, and would let him continue the Republican anti-poor people campaign.
