If you’ve been on the internet in the past day, you may have seen this JTA article talking about how Dutch kids made up a word “Jew” to mean “Cool.”
People make up words all the time. Some turn out to be nothing. Others blow up until they are so annoying and terrible. I’m looking at you, ‘swag’ and ‘yolo’. I wouldn’t say Jew has been blown out of the water and everyone is using it yet. But I will say it is no longer cool and for two reasons.
- Every Jewish website is talking about it. And by every, I mean I saw it on Tablet, Jewcy, and Heeb. All discussing how cool we are now that our religion finally has a positive meaning instead of being used as a verb in a negative connotation (ex: You’re making me pay for my own drink? I feel like you are Jewing me on our first date.) Anyone who talks about how cool they are, suddenly becomes so much less cool. Don’t acknowledge the compliment. It’s the law of being cool.
- Once a linguist gets hold of a word, it’s no longer “cool.” The point of having “cool” dialect is so that old farts don’t know what it means. It’s a code word to get old people to stop talking to us. Just think about Andy Rooney (RIP) talking about swag and how he YOLO’s all the time. *shutters*
This is why we can’t have nice things.
