World sports are always hilarious, especially when it comes to sports that only the USA actively promotes and watches. Since USA dominates world culture, but the IOC doesn’t give a shit about baseball, we get to put on a dog and pony World Baseball Classic to remind the rest of the world that we are mediocre at baseball. Every few years a bunch of no-name local players, along with half a dozen or more American players in single-A or double-A baseball, lose to the Americans or Japan or Cubans or South Koreans.
This year we got to witness the ironic match up between Israel and South Africa. Ironic because it’s a lot of professional baseball players, most born in America (or grew up here), versus each other. Yaaay world sports!
It’s also ironic because Israel beat South Africa. The last time Israel beat South Africa was in 1987, when they became the last Democratic country to stop selling weapons and support South Africa’s apartheid regime. Maybe it was because most of the 100,000 Jews there were winning in the apartheid. It may have been because there was lots of gold and diamonds that were owned or financed by Jews. (Thanks for the stereotypes, you heartless selfish assholes.) Ironically many prominent South African Jews opposed apartheid.
Well, I’m just glad South Africa has forgiven Israel. It must take a lot for a country of disenfranchised citizens to forgive a government which was somewhat responsible for oppressing their people.
But I mean, c’mon, there were Jews and diamonds and gold, yknow???
Can we talk about how playing the series in Florida gives Israel an unfair home field advantage?
