This Barbie relates to today’s hip, modern, Jewish teens, right?!?!
Meh. Another post by a crazy old dood from the Wall Street Journal who is totally out of touch with today’s youth, trying to explain the current trends in ‘Hip Judaism’. It’s like journalism is some shitty underpaid profession where people no longer have any self respect. And therefore they just ask a random Rabbi, or some college students, or a random Twitter account for an opinion, and they call it a day! Article written, another soul-crushing $50 bucks made. I’m sure old conservatives will be able to tell us what the current trends are!
What last year seemed like a happy coincidence has become a hip new Hanukkah tradition: groups of harmonizing young Jews releasing seriously Jewish, yet seriously danceable, songs for the Festival of Lights.
Jews worldwide are embracing these culturally contemporary Jewish music videos. Mark Kligman, a professor of Jewish musicology at Hebrew Union College in New York, couldn’t be happier. “I met the Maccabeats and I said, ‘I really want to hug you, because you’re the ones who are going to keep my kids Jewish,’” said Kligman. He said the Maccabeats, Fountainheads, Aish Ha Torah, The Groggers and a host of college a capella groups are breaking ground with Jewish music in a different way than the icons of Jewish music of the last generation.
