What do you do if you’re an up and coming indie band who needs to pay the bills/buy new equipment/re-up their weed stash? Make a commercial for Guitar Center, of course.
The two lo-fi/surf pop indie darlings of recent fame have teamed up to write a song for Target last year, then re-used it for Guitar Center this year. Hey, if you’re going to sell out, might as well be lazy about it, right? I’m not even mad, the fact that they can get away with using the same song two years in a row for two different companies makes me laugh. As far as I’m concerned, this has earned points for Wavves and Best Coast in my book.
As long as we’re keeping tabs, that’s the first time selling out has had a positive effect on a band in my eyes. Not even Wavves’ weed grinder did that. And it certainly helps that the song is much better than every single other holiday ad that uses an original song. Especially Hyundai. I thought Pomplamoose was annoying, but the one with the white dudes rapping about their car is painful to the point where I’d rather listen to Friday.
Now if only either Best Coast or Wavves could make a regular LP worth listening to. (BOOM)
