If you are a good hipster and, like myself, grew up on such BBC classics as “Fawlty Towers,” “Black Adder,” “Keeping Up Appearances,” and “Yes, Minister,” then you probably already know what I am going to tell you: JENNIFER SAUNDERS IS WRITING AN “ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS” MOVIE! In this article from The Guardian, I learned that not only is there a movie in the works, but also several BBC specials.
Wait. Are you lost? Should I explain a little bit?
“Absolutely Fabulous” or, as it is often referred to, ABFAB, was a BBC series that ran from 1992 to the early 2000′s, is having a bit of a comeback.
The show revolves around ex-hippie PR agent Edina Monsoon (formerly Edwina), her daughter Saffie (short for Saffron) and Edina’s drug and alcohol-addled fashion editor and best friend, Patsy Stone. Edina, “Eddie,” is played by Jennifer Saunders, the brilliant mind that penned the series to begin with. And Patsy, former model and former transsexual, is played by Joanna Lumley. Saffron, played with boundless cynicism and a palpable pent-up rage against her mentally abusive mother, is played by Julia Sawalha.
Patsy and Eddie are Bolly-Stoli (Bollinger and Stolichnya) swigging, drug-abusing, money-squandering, fad-chasing members of the British nouveau riche. Their foibles and fuck-ups provided endless laughs when I was a kid and they continue to do so.
The video below is 9 minutes of ABFAB hilarity. With German subtitles, for all you Germans HipsterJews.
Hipstermen take note: Want to impress your hipster lady-love? Mention the ABFAB movie. But make sure to do it in a very un-gay way. Because this show is really only enjoyable for the ladies/gays. Mostly it’s just super offensive and bawdy.
“You can’t buy happiness darling, but you can bloody well charge it!”
