I’ve had my rants and raves about how indie musicians need to find other interesting ideas for music videos, instead of going with the ol’ “I’ll add a hip, relevant comedian/actor and everyone will love me!”. For reference, see: New Pornographers, Ted Leo We are the World Part 2, Interpol, Beastie Boys (the exception the rule). Seriously. This is just a drop in the bucket. Click every artist and it will take you to a different music video with some famous comedian. Jeeeee-ziz.
This video contains the most relevant thing Jack Black has done in 6 years, so I’ll give him that credit. It was directed by a Daily Show writer, too, so that adds hipster-points to it. If only more bands could pull this shtick off as well as the The Beastie Boys did it…
But then it would become a trend and everyone would do it. Stupid trends.
P.S. Does anyone know who started this trend? Could we pin it on Fatboy Slim’s Weapon of Choice featuring Christopher Walken? Or would Fiona Apple’s Not About Love take the cake with a young(ish) Zack Galifanakis circa 2005?
