All young Jews dream of being famous sports stars. From inception, Jewish babies are regaled with stories of the Jewish greats, like Sandy Koufax, Hank Greenberg, etc. But the fact remains that most Jews don’t actually do well in sports. We have bad eye-sight, are generally average height, and aren’t particularly interested in a consistent work-out regiment.
Recently I read about the first ever ‘Bagel Bowl’. This football game consisted of a bunch of scrawny Jewish high school kids playing football against each other. Just like 8th grade Jewish Day School recess, but more formalized and with uniforms.
What do I think about this?
It just boosts egos but does little to keep our children from becoming bro-ified. Winning a legitimate football match (legitimate being a loose term here) will only boost their egos, and make these boys think they can compete against legitimate football stars. They will join AEPi in college, and they will be lost forever.
More importantly, their younger siblings will think that football is ‘cool’ and that being a ‘bro’ is totally ‘sweet’. We don’t need future generations of Jewish children getting broken on the field of broken dreams.

Son, trade in those uniforms for some skinny jeans and an apathetic, scoffing attitude!
