In case you haven’t heard, there have been demonstrations in Israel, about outrageously priced housing. And unlike London, these demonstrations (not riots though) haven’t included as many Hassidic Jews (like less than 5). Of course over 200,000 people turned out in Tel Aviv to demonstrate, the youthful, secular Hipster capital of Israel. So what does this mean?
That Israel, unlike the U.S. still has a middle class. And this middle class is actually willing to do what it takes to preserve itself. Because it turns out if you want some semblance of a democracy to exist, you need an incredibly strong middle class.
“Until now most people thought it was their fault that they could not get by,” she said, “but now they are realizing it’s hard for everyone and that they are not alone.” (NYTimes)
Just like in THIS country! If only I cared. But I don’t. So I’m going to drink a PBR. And pay my shitty rent. You can fuck off now, thanks.
