So I am a few weeks behind everyone else that’s talked about this release. I’ll admit, I was discouraged by some comparisons to Sleigh Bells, whom I don’t particularly care for. But once I got over that and decided to give this album a shot, I haven’t been listening to anything else this whole week. Cults’ brand of loud, brazen twee pop is addicting.
Sure, maybe in a couple of months I will have moved on and this record might turn out to have no lasting significance, but right now I can say that Cults is fun, energetic, and super easy to sing along to. It’s built as simple pop, and the duo does it as well as any other pop duo– the choruses are loud and fun, the verses lyrically clever enough to carry over the energy from the last chorus. Simple drumbeats, clean guitar licks and sparse piano combine with Madeline Follin’s main vocals to make songs that are greater than the sum of their parts. People might give me shit for unabashedly fawning over a record that Pitchfork BNM’d, but whatever dude. I can’t hear you over the sound of me singing “You Know What I Mean” in the shower.

TWEE AS FUCK
I want to ride shotgun in a car with “Go Outside” blaring, stick my head out of the window and sing along at the top of my lungs. I’ve listened to plenty of good music this year, but this is definitely the most fun that I’ve had listening to one album in a good while.
I give it 4 Halls out of 5 Oates.

wooooo! lovin this album! pop it in when you’re at a bonfire or driving around town late at night with the windows down. It’s the perfect feel good music for the summer right now… been listening to it a lot. Also, for only 6 bucks on amazon right now you can’t go wrong!
