The “Ukulele craze” began over a decade ago. It slowly took over both commercial and indie music. Now that the NYTimes has talked about it, it is obviously dead. But let’s look at this decaying musical phenomenon that is coming to an end.
- Tiny Tim did it back in the 60s. That’s right he did it first. Deal.
-
Some dude from Pearl Jam is coming out with a Ukulele album
-
Some chick from Dresden Dolls plays a covers album with a ukulele
-
Our own favorite Hipster Jew band Neutral Uke Hotel have been touring for quite some time covering Neutral Milk Hotel. They weren’t mentioned in the article, so they are free from my scoffing and verbal abuse.
If you want to look at how this dying musical phenomenon began, check out the brief NYTimes history here. Or just go to the wikipedia page here.

I hope it doesn’t die. The beauty in music isn’t so that a few hipsters can be cool playing obscure instruments in dingy pubs in college towns; it’s in the sharing of great music amongst many peoples. And considering how few people read these days, a lonely article in the New York Times won’t make a great difference. Besides, a Ukulele will always be infinitely cooler than a guitar or bass guitar.

You really think the ukulele craze it’s dying because it’s becoming too mainstream? Just give it time. When everyone who just jumped on the ukulele bandwagon jumps off to find something else to call “indie” the uke can once again be a small time instrument until it get popular again. Who cares what the NYT says. Not sure if that made any scene…
