Onili is an Israeli dance/pop duo from Tel Aviv that remind me just a bit of The Tings Tings’ Shut Up and Let Me Go. Comprising of Onili (female singer) and Barak Kram (Drums/Beatmaster), Onili is certainly a fun duo to dance to. And they have already torn up the Israeli dance scene, leaving dance floors in destruction and orgies. Are we next?
(+5 points for fulfilling the stereotype of the hairy, topless, bald Israeli man)
Now this is not their first year at SXSW. They went last year too! I know that because of an interview the band did for Spinner.com. I also learned from this interview that:
- The music has a French-European influence because Onili lived in Paris most of her life
- Her music producer was a Jew (duhh)
- She writes songs in Hebrew, English, and French
Onili is one of those groups I’m going to have to keep my eye on. With roots in 3 different cultures it’s only a matter of time before she explodes onto the dance scene somewhere in the world as the next M.I.A. I’m just hoping Onili doesn’t explode politically and make everyone hate her like M.I.A.
