I’m pretty sure Zooey is creating a new fad for indie music. 2010 was Kanye. 2011 is ‘hipster covers’, and Zooey is just beating out the mainstreamers. ‘Hipster covers’ is where indie musicians cover music that was written and performed by older, ‘vintage’ musicians. This probably has to do with the fact that hipsters these days have so many side projects, making macaroni and glue sculptures among various other artistic pursuits. Add drinking at bars 7 days a week, and they have little time to perform AND write original material.

Pop Covers Pop Covers Pop Covers Pop.
Genre Covers Genre. Irony is and isn’t.
Need I remind you of:

Now shut the fuck up and just admit that you needed an excuse to post something with that woman in it.

Covers are a form of postmodern art which in many ways is an ironic form of art. BOOM ROASTED
Irony has bounds greater than you think.

I’m just saying it’s nothing new…for anyone.
Consider Sebadoh’s Pink Moon.

Why stop there? Elvis Presley was one of the biggest to cover music. Shit, I’ve heard 5 different versions of “Love Me.” And that was composed by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
To bring back irony into this whole thing. On the 2009 compilation album “Sweetheart: Our Favorite Artists Sing Their Favorite Love Songs” that features this She & Him song, there is a “Love Me” cover by Department of Eagles.
