Shortly after David Berman started looking at his Jewish roots, he decided to take the Silver Jews out on tour for the first time ever. Berman did two shows in Israel. One in Tel Aviv and one in Jerusalem. I actually believe that Berman was a bit upset he couldn’t go on Birthright due to its age restrictions. So he quit drinking and headed out to the holy land to rock tits for the first time in his Silver Jews career. The movie is an elevating experience for all viewers and participants. You go through this entire formation of how Berman is starting to find himself and find who he is through the places that are mentioned in the scriptures or symbolism of Jewish culture. At one point, we see Berman at the wailing wall, just bursting out the water works. But thats what happens in Israel. Just the smallest things can break you to pieces, it’s so overwhelming.
I mean, just three years after Berman stepped foot in Israel, Here I am, crying like a little bitch and having to cover it up with my awesome shades.
There are other great moments that I was able to see in my own trip to Israel. I too got into huge arguments with people in the shuk. (Did you know that 16 and 60 sound exactly the same when uttered in a foreign accent?) For any self respecting Silver Jews fan, this film is a must. Legit, if you don’t shed a tear or get a boner while watching, you have no soul.
