For Passover MM, seeing how the first Seder is only an hour away, I want to give you a unique view on the Passover Seder. While most of us will be reading out of Haggadahs (maybe from your iphone), some of us hip-hop lovers will prefer to groove to a different beat.
Socalled, a Jewish Montreal hip-hop artist (whom I am writing a more comprehensive article about later in the week), created an album several years ago appropriately titled ‘The So Called Seder: A Hip Hop Haggadah’.
Socalled mixes traditional klezmer music, old school 1930s records, and some modern musicians and hip-hop artists to create a fairly rare sound. If I had to attempt to describe the music in Hipster-speak, I would say it sounded a little like a Jewish RJD2 meeting The Avalanche.
Hey University Hillels, if you want to get young college kids to care about Judaism, play a few of these tracks during the Seder. Or do what Emory University did and invite some Ethiopian/Israeli hip-hop artists to hang out during the seder.
Jdub records, once again we must thank you for producing music that young, Jewish hipsters, and even regular goyim, can be proud of. Make sure to enjoy those 4 cups of wine tonight, you deserve it. And readers, do them a favor and buy this album immediately.
