Jdub Records, the most Jewish part of the music industry, has cultivated the first hip Jewish band for children since Uncle Moishy. The Macaroons are a band that sings songs for children about Passover. The man behind the music is Shawn Fogel, whose previous work includes The Zambonis, the Hannukah-related The Leevees, and power-pop rock Golden Bloom.
The Macaroons just released their first music video called Matzoh Ball (don’t kick it). Presumably, some children have had trouble remembering that matzoh balls, our Jewish equivalent to Italian meatballs, should NOT be kicked. It’s an understandable mistake that little people might make, and The Macaroons try to ensure that it doesn’t happen twice.
For those of you who don’t know, a macaroon is a tasty dessert morsel that comes around once a year during Passover, kinda like the annual Easter bunny’s chocolate eggs. There are many different flavors, including chocolate, chocolate fudge, and coconut. The Macaroons, whose tag line is ‘let’s go coconuts!’ presumably approves of the latter flavor.
The band sounds a little like a Jewish They Might be Giants, and you can hear the influence of The Leevees in their songs. Although their EP wont be released until April 6th, you can preorder it for the last days of Passover. Now that’s a spicy matzoh ball!
