I’m always fascinated by random Jewish references in cartoons, especially older ones. This early Betty Boop cartoon (‘Dizzy Dishes’ from 1930) boasts fairly typical animation for that time period – movement is timed to music whenever possible, lip sync mouth shapes are over exaggerated, eyes are black dots or black dots with diagonal slits in them, and appendages of moving objects are really noodle-y. At around 1:44, the inept cook gets a request for ham, and throws at the offender a piece of meat with the Hebrew characters for “kosher” on it. The next, uh, ‘person,’ that pokes his head through the window requests, in a Yiddish accent, what sounds like ‘bagels and fishes, where’s my knishes, mach schnell!”
